In Quebec, the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) strictly regulates the transportation of children in vehicles:

An appropriate car seat is mandatory for all children under 9 years old or under 145 cm (4 ft 9 in) tall.

The seat must meet Canadian safety standards (look for the sticker indicating compliance).

A seat belt alone should only be used when the child is tall enough that it rests properly on their hips and shoulder, without a booster seat.

👉 Fine for non-compliance: $80 to $100, plus 3 demerit points.

In Quebec, the law requires children to be seated in a restraint system adapted to their weight and height until the age of 9 or until they are 145 cm (4 ft 9 in) tall.

From birth to 10 kg (22 lb): Use a rear-facing car seat.

From 10 to 18 kg (22 to 40 lb): Switch to a forward-facing seat with harness.

From 18 to 36 kg (40 to 80 lb): Use a booster seat until the seatbelt fits properly without it.

⚠️ Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your seat. Ensure it is properly installed and does not move more than 2.5 cm in any direction.

Even with the best intentions, some mistakes can compromise a child’s safety in the car:

Not fastening the harness correctly (e.g., thick coat under the straps).

Using a second-hand seat without knowing its history.

Installing the seat without following recommended angles or anchors.

Switching to the next seat or to a seatbelt too early.

A good habit: have your installation checked by a certified technician or watch official SAAQ videos.

👉 Distraction is one of the most common pitfalls for new drivers.
