What is a class 5 license?

In Quebec, there are 12 different license classes. Depending on the class of vehicle you wish to drive, you will need to obtain the corresponding licence.

A class 5 license allows you to drive passenger vehicles alone. This means a motor vehicle with two axles and a net weight of less than 4500kgs.

The class 5 driver’s license allows you to drive different types of vehicles:

  • an automobile
  • a motor home
  • a tool vehicle
  • a service vehicle
  • a moped, such as a scooter or moped
  • a tractor
  • a three-wheeled vehicle such as T-Rex or Slingshot

How to get a class 5 license?

To get a car licence, you must be at least 16 years old. If you are under 18, you must have the written consent of your parent or guardian.

However, it is possible to register for a driving course before the age of 16 in order to complete the theory portion.

Before you can obtain a Class 5 licence, you must obtain a learner’s permit, successfully complete a driving course and pass the SAAQ theory and practical tests.

The course consists of 24 hours of theory, divided into 12 modules (2 hours per module) and 15 hours of practice on the road (55 minutes per trip with an instructor). Ou (55 minutes per session with an instructor).

The minimum course length is then 39 hours before obtaining your class 5 license. Check out our rates and get started today!

Here are the 4 phases of obtaining
class 5 licence:

Phase 1

(Learner’s Permit Prerequisite)

Phase 1 allows you to obtain your learner’s permit. This permit is required to move on to the next phases. You will learn how a car works, how the environment can affect the way you drive and the factors that increase the risk of an accident.

Phase 2

(Steered Driving)

This is the phase where you begin your first road trips.
This phase allows you to better anticipate risky situations and react accordingly to adopt a safe, cooperative and responsible behavior.

Phase 3

(Semi-directed driving)

In this phase you will learn about speeding, sharing the road and the dangers of alcohol and drugs.

Phase 4

(Semi-supervised to autonomous driving)

Here you will learn about the effects of fatigue on driving and eco-driving, which is safe, economical and environmentally friendly driving.

Theoretical training to obtain a driver’s license

Before making an appointment for the theory tests for your car license (class 5), you must have held a learner’s permit for at least 10 months.

The theory portion of the test can be done with an instructor in a classroom or online. However, to make sure you understand all the theory, it is recommended that you continue to learn through self-study by practicing and doing the exercises from the modules seen in class.

Once you feel ready to take the test and have held a learner’s permit for at least 10 months, you can make an appointment to take your test.

The test will cost $12 and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

The test will cover what you have learned in class, traffic laws, signs and signals, as well as the behaviours and techniques of driving a passenger vehicle.

To register for the theory test, you can make an appointment online directly on the SAAQ website or via the telephone service by providing your learner’s permit number.

Please note that if you fail the theory test, there is a minimum 28-day waiting period before you can re-schedule.

Practical training to obtain the car license

Once the theoretical training is validated, you must complete the practical part. It consists of 15 road trips of 55 minutes each.

Before each trip, the trainer will discuss with you the maneuvers he will have to make and the behaviors you will have to adopt. At the end of the outing, you will discuss with the trainer your strengths, areas for improvement and the elements you will need to practice during the following outings.

The objective of the practical portion is to learn how to behave safely, maneuver a passenger vehicle (car) and use the road system independently, cooperatively and responsibly.

Once your instructor thinks you are ready, and you have had your learner’s permit for more than 12 months, you can register for the road test.

The test takes about an hour and will cost you $30 to register. You will also have to add $54.60 to pay for the probationary licence if you pass the test.

As for the theory test, registration is done via the SAAQ website, or via the telephone service. There is also a 28-day waiting period before rescheduling an appointment if you fail the road test.

It is important to note that during the test, the SAAQ does not have a vehicle. It is therefore up to you to present a safe vehicle in good mechanical condition, otherwise the test will not take place.
